The John Howard Society of North Island has services catering to youth and family, alcohol and drug treatment services and education.
Provides community justice and social services to youth, children, adults, and families with diverse needs in northern Vancouver Island. Works with a broad spectrum of community agencies and communities to build safer and healthier communities. Services include but are not limited to: detox and stabilization programs for youth; counselling services for youth and adults; youth/parent mediation; and alcohol and drug early intervention programs for youth. List of available programs and types are listed below:

Youth and Family Services:
  • Youth and Family Substance Use Services: Alcohol and drug counselling services for youth, offering assessment, treatment, and individual, group, and family counselling.
  • Collaborative Planning: Facilitates a shared decision-making process for families, children, and youth involved with MCFD.
  • Youth to Adult Transition: Helping youth prepare for independent living
  • Youth Outreach Support: Reaches out to youth in the community. Reduces high-risk behaviours through supportive counselling and assisting youth in accessing needed services and healthy activities.
  • FOUNDRY Youth Mental Health Counselling: Walk-in mental health counselling for young people.
  • Foundry Youth Peer Support Provides individual and group peer support, navigation, and information.
  • KidStart: Mentoring services for children and youth ages 6-12, delivered by carefully screened and trained volunteers.
  • Barnett House: Five short-term housing apartments for youth.
  • Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services: Assesses and treats youth involved in the criminal justice system within the context of their family and community to decrease their involvement in the system.
  • Oasis Girls Program: Program tailored to the individual needs of female youth ages 14-18.
  • Headstart Boys Program: Program designed to meet the individual needs of male youth ages 14-18.
  • Youth and Family Conflict Resolution: Counselling and conflict resolution for youth and their families.
  • Child and Youth Mental Health Outreach: Collaborative support for families whose children require intensive intervention strategies
  • Gold River Youth and Family Counselling: Counselling for youth and families in Gold River and Tahsis
  • Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services: Assessment and treatment services for youth

Care Givers Program:
  • Behavioural Consultant - Education and support for MCFD caregivers

Youth Justice Programs:
  • Intensive Support and Supervision - One-to-one support for youth on probation.(Offered in Port Hardy, Campbell River, Comox Valley, Parksville, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, and Duncan).
  • Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services: Assessment and treatment services for youth
  • Full-Time Attendance Programs: A program for youth as an alternative to custody.

Adult Services:
  • The Junction: An adult supportive housing program in Courtenay, BC. The program provides 46 supportive housing units with 24/7 staffing for adults ages 19+ who are experiencing chronic homelessness.
  • The Station: A youth housing facility in Courtenay. The program provides furnished suites for young people ages 17-22.
  • Homeless Outreach and Prevention: The program offers support to find housing, rental supplements, and referrals to appropriate agencies.

Alcohol and Drug Programs:
  • 180 Degrees Detox and Stabilization: Provides detox and supportive recovery services to youth.
  • Level UP @ The Station: Voluntary residential supportive recovery program for youth 16-19
  • Alcohol & Drug Prevention & Early Intervention: Provides alcohol and drug services within designated School District 72 school(s). Provides information and assists youth in early identification and access to services, including education, counselling, referrals, and groups.
  • Youth & Family Alcohol & Drug Counselling: Alcohol and drug counselling for youth and their families.

Details: All clients must go through the intake process with the intake counsellor. All future clients must be willingly volunteer to seek help.
