Youth/Parent Mediation - Counselling and Conflict Resolution for Youth and their Families

Provided by John Howard Society - North Island

A free family counselling service for youth (aged 12+) and parents in conflict. Serves youth & parents together or separately. Has the ability to respond quickly, usually within 48 hours. Based out of Campbell River.
Offers a secure, safe, and confidential environment where family members can be open and honest about what is happening, knowing there will be no judgements. Counsellors will listen carefully to understand what the issues are (including any safety issues) and help clients decide what the next steps should be. The goal is for families to become more stable and peaceful, learn different ways to communicate with each other and have a better understanding of resources in the community.

The Mediator can help families use their strengths to reduce conflict within the family and develop respectful plans to minimize future conflict.

The Mediator works with youth to:
  • improve communication skills
  • build positive coping skills
  • develop different ways of solving problems
  • handle difficult situations

The Mediator works with parents to:
  • better understand adolescent development
  • demonstrate and practice more effective communication skills both verbal and non-verbal
  • “pick and choose your battles” and hopefully bring more peace and harmony to the family home
  • provide referrals to other services

This service is confidential, voluntary, and free.
